Jewish tradition is largely defined by communal ceremony and ritual. For centuries, these have been bringing people together in different times and places, with established tradition encountering new forms and developments again and again. Ritual objects are almost always a part of this. These may be designed for a specific purpose or created from simple everyday objects. Their ritual use accords them special religious significance.
The design of these objects has transformed over time. While they retain their basic function, they are continually subjected to artistic, cultural, and personal reinterpretation. The special exhibition “Follow the Function?” presents objects for religious use designed by Rachel Kanter, Rhonda Lieberman, and Sari Srulovitch in contemporary style. The artists break new ground while infusing their objects with subject matter connected to ritual. Their works showcase modern design while reflecting a deep personal exploration of the meaning of ritual. Function remains the foremost criterion, with one important difference: now, together with the aesthetic aspects of the work, it is paired with content that is sometimes humorous.
